The Format of Our Banker Cover Letter Example

The banker cover letter example on this page is written in a “block” format, one of the most widely accepted formats for business letters internationally. Its name is derived from the sections or blocks of text used in the letter’s construction. The text is all justified to the left margin of the page, a space separating each “block” of text. Our example is also designed so that you can edit it at home, cutting and pasting so that you can replace the existing information with your own.

Breakdown of Our Banker Cover Letter Example

The Addressing

This is a fairly simple section to construct. Your name and contact information are written first on the left side of the page followed by the date, and then the recruiter or company name, all separated by a space.  It’s best to address the letter to a specific person, but if you don’t have a name there is no need to panic. Simply use the company name and address instead. Although it’s better to have an individual’s name and address it to them directly, it’s not a deal-breaker if you don’t. Here’s how the addressing of the letter looks in our banker cover letter example:

Dear Mr. Moore,

The Introduction

Here is where you let the prospective employer or recruiters know what position you are applying for, who you are, and how you found out about the position. Let them know if you learned of the opening from a friend, a newspaper advertisement, a mutual friend, or acquaintance etc. Once they know who you are, let them know what you’ve learned about their company, and why you would like to work for them. Our banker cover letter example takes this approach:

I am interested in the position of Financial Analyst that has opened up at Global Bank. I recently attended a seminar on Hedge Funds with James Edwards, manager of your client Relations Dept. I am convinced after discussing the position with James that my academic achievements, professional experience, and extra-curricular activities, are a perfect match for Global Bank.

I am very impressed by Global Bank’s dedication to SEC Securities standards, continued education programs, and of course the annual Global Bank Run for Fun that supports the Children’s Welfare foundation.

Your Skills and Background – What Makes you a Good Fit

This is generally the longest section of a cover letter. It is here that you reveal your current assignment, previous job experience, and your academic qualifications. Try to highlight skills and qualifications that are directly related to your capability to thrive in this position and add value to the company. Try to be clear and concise, keeping this paragraph to not more than six or seven, maximum ten sentences. We do it this way in our banker cover letter example:

I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to provide you with further information on my background and academic achievements, but here are two major skills I would bring to the position:

  • Industry Insight and Impact:  For the past eighteen months I have been closely monitored the financial industry news, met with alums on Wall Street to gain an understanding of their jobs, and assumed increasing amounts of responsibility as a member of our university’s investment club. Last summer I served an internship at Morgan Global Investments on the trading floor with the company’s most successful trader. I also manage my own equity account of $25,000 that to date has generated a 27% return.
  • Leadership: I am presently the Chief Investment Officer of my university’s $150,000 student-run investment fund.

Conclusion

In this section you simply thank the reader for their consideration and attention, let them know that your resume is enclosed or attached, and provide a call to action – in other words request an interview, but not directly. Watch how we do it in our banker cover letter example.

I have attached my resume for your review, and I will follow up by telephone next week to discuss meeting with you. If you choose, you may contact me on 412-755-4986 or by email at jrichardson@email.com. Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to meeting with you in person. Provided the opportunity, I am confident that with my experience and academic achievements, I would be an asset to your organization.

Notice how the writer did not use the word interview or ask directly for a meeting, he simply states that he will call to speak about it. This sort of statement propels employers to action, as they prefer to call you rather than you call them. Our completed banker cover letter example then looks like this:
